Draw a dolphin to win Darla!

Butterfield has launched a children’s art competition, which will run throughout May 2020 in the build-up to World Oceans Day on 8 June 2020.

The Bank invites all Channel Island children to create a piece of artwork featuring a dolphin in honour of its Junior Ocean Advocate mascot—Darla the Dolphin. Butterfield launched the Junior Ocean Advocate project in February 2020 in collaboration with the Plastic Free communities of Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney. Darla is no ordinary cuddly dolphin; her belly contains common plastic pollutants like straws and bottles which can be pulled out. The project set out to educate primary school children across the islands about what it means to be an ocean advocate and how single use plastic is negatively impacting the ocean.

Every primary school across the islands received a Junior Ocean Advocate pack with resources for schools to help teach children about marine pollution and encourage them to protect their local marine environments. Now Butterfield is giving islanders the chance to win their very own Junior Ocean Advocate pack which includes Darla and two fictional books about protecting the marine environment.

Richard Saunders, Butterfield’s Managing Director in the Channel Islands said: “Butterfield has operations in many island jurisdictions across the world, so supporting the marine environment is extremely important to us. Linking the Junior Ocean Advocate project with World Oceans Day seemed like a perfect fit as both aim to help promote and protect our oceans.”

“We have witnessed the creativity of young people throughout the COVID-19 lockdown, and we can’t wait to see all their amazing dolphin-themed artwork. There are no limits—children are welcome to colour, paint or collage their dolphins as they wish.”

To enter your artwork, take a clear photo of your dolphin and e-mail it along with your name, age and island to darla@butterfieldgroup.com.

There are eight Junior Ocean Advocate packs up for grabs, with a panel of judges choosing four winners from each island. Entries will be split into four age categories (under fours, ages four to six, ages seven to ten and age 11 and over) with one winner selected from each. Winners will be announced on World Oceans Day on Butterfield’s Facebook page and they will contacted by e-mail.
